Student Athlete Advisory Committee Constitution

Article I. Name
Student Athlete Advisory Committee of the University of Kansas (SAAC)

Article II. - Purpose
The purpose of SAAC is to provide student-athletes the opportunity to communicate more effectively with the University of Kansas athletic administration, coaches, and staff. It enables student-athletes to provide recommendations for the improvement of academic, athletic, and social experiences. It also encourages community involvement through service projects and fundraisers. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athlete's lives on the University of Kansas campus. The committee encourages unity, common purpose and camaraderie between teams and among all student-athletes.

Article III. - Mission Statement
"The mission of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image."

Article IV. - Membership
A. Full SAAC will consist of representatives from each sports team, with a least one individual being an underclassman. These representatives must be current student-athletes in good academic and behavioral standing with the university and their teams.
B. At the third to last Full SAAC meeting of the year there will be discussion about nominating new SAAC members. Current SAAC representatives should have a meeting with their respective coaches, nominating new representatives. The chosen representatives should attend at least the last Full SAAC meeting of the year.
C. The amount of representatives from each team, depend on the size of the respective team.

D. Although all student-athletes at the University of Kansas are welcome to attend full SAAC meetings, only two votes will be allowed from each team. All required members still must attend the meetings regardless of who is casting the votes.
E. There must be at least one member from a majority (9 teams) of the teams present to conduct voting.
F. Voting will only be done in full SAAC, only those who are present may vote, and majority vote wins.
G. In the event of a tie there will be continued discussion and a revote, if there is still a tie the upperclassman voting representative from each team will vote, and if there is still a tie then the deciding vote will be rotated between teams alphabetically (women then men) starting with Women's Basketball.
H. Representatives are responsible for coming to the meetings two times a month, and act as a liaison between their respective teams and the committee.
I. Representatives are responsible for giving and seeking input from their teams in a medium (meetings, e-mail, newsletter) which is best suited for their team at least two times a month and will be asked to report back to Full SAAC about their discussions.
J. SAAC will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, handicap, age, sexual orientation, or political and religious affiliation in any of its policies, procedures, or practices.

Article V. - Structure
A. Out of the required membership in SAAC there will be a leadership committee that consists of 13 members. This committee acts as the directing force of SAAC.
B. There are four sub-committees consisting of the leadership committee members.

    External Relations - This committee is the liaison between the student athletes and the community. They are in charge of organizing volunteer events with different programs within the surrounding community.
    Legislation - This committee has knowledge of the existing regulations, researches new proposals and relays this information to SAAC. They also record athletes' feedback on proposals and present the results to the KU administration, Big 12, and the NCAA.
    Internal Affairs - This committee is designed to facilitate communication, collaboration, and coordination between the student-athletes and administrators. This committee will voice any concerns and needs of our fellow student-athletes.
    Student-Athlete Welfare - This committee is designed to bring students together by creating activities, events and traditions just for them. This committee will also be in charge of making sure the SAAC website is updated and developing the end of the year surveys.

C. When there are opportunities for involvement, each sub-committee is responsible for presenting the opportunity to the full SAAC committee.
D. Whenever there is an opening in the SAAC leadership committees, SAAC leadership will have the opportunity to restructure the existing committees and then the final openings in the Leadership committees will be taken to Full SAAC where the positions will be announced and any student-athlete interested will fill out an application. Finally, the Leadership committee will vote on those applications, and new members will be announced before the last meeting of the semester.

Article VI. - Meetings
A. Full SAAC and SAAC leadership will meet on alternating Monday's. (Two times a month) B. Responsibility for conducting the meeting, the agenda, and the minutes will rotate within the leadership sub-committees.

Article VII. - Advisor
The advisor is assigned by the Director of Athletics and will remain until an official resignation is submitted. The administrator that is in charge of student-athlete welfare also oversees SAAC.

Article VIII. - Amendments
Amendments to the constitution shall be presented in writing at a regular meeting by any member of SAAC. Action on the proposed amendment shall be taken at the next regular meeting. The tree-fourths majority of members of the council shall be required for the amendment to pass.
