Weather permitting, beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-435 from I-35 to US-69 will be closed to traffic, along with numerous ramp closures, for the demolition of two of the three Quivira Road over I-435 interchange bridges in Overland Park (Johnson County).  The Quivira Road bridges will be demolished via implosion at approximately 10:00 p.m. that evening. The existing bridges will collapse onto a bed of dirt so as to cushion the fall onto the existing I-435 roadway. Crews will then spend the remainder of the overnight closure removing the imploded bridge debris and cleaning up the I-435 roadway. Construction for the new bridges will take place during the 2012 construction season.
The scheduled lane and ramp closures for the Quivira Road bridge demolition work will occur as follows. All lane and ramp closures will reopen to traffic by 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, March 4.
At 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, the following closures will occur:
  • Four left lanes of eastbound I-435 before I-35
  • Two right lanes of eastbound I-435 at Quivira Road
  • Three left lanes of westbound I-435 at ramp to US-69
  • Right lane at WB I-435 @ Quivira Rd
  • Northbound and southbound I-35 to eastbound I-435 ramps
  • Northbound and southbound US-69 to westbound I-435 ramps
  • Antioch Road to westbound I-435 ramp

At 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, the following closures will occur:
  • All lanes of eastbound I-435 at I-35
  • All lanes of westbound I-435 at ramp to northbound US-69
Note:  All lanes of Quivira Road over I-435 will be closed for a short time during the demolition of the bridges for approximately 40 minutes.
Advance message boards will alert traffic to the lane and ramp closures.  Drivers should expect MAJOR DELAYS and will need to use alternate routes during the lane and ramp closures.  A marked detour will be provided.  Eastbound I-435 traffic will detour via northbound I-35 to eastbound 87th Street to southbound US-69 back to eastbound I-435.  Westbound I-435 traffic will detour via northbound US-69 to westbound 87th Street to southbound I-35 back to westbound I-435. Updated daily traffic information for this project can be viewed online at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp.
Planned improvements for theI-435 & US-69 Red Project will add auxiliary lanes to I-435 between US-69 and Quivira Road.  These improvements will help address congestion at the I-435 and US-69 interchange.  Project work includes: construction of southbound collector-distributor road network along US-69 between 103rd Street and 119th Street, widening work on eastbound and westbound I-435, and construction of collector-distributor road network along I-435 between I-35 and US-69.  Interchange improvements will be completed at I-435 & Quivira Road, I-435 & US-69, US-69 & College Boulevard, and US-69 & 119th Street.
This phase of the US-69 & I-435 improvements in Johnson County is part of KDOT's T-WORKS program and the selection of this project was announced in February 2011.  The estimated construction cost for the project is $102 million with an estimated economic impact, or benefit of $779 million.
Clarkson Construction is the primary contractor on this improvement project.  The entire project is scheduled to be completed in late 2013, weather permitting.
The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and "Give 'Em a Brake!" when approaching and driving through the project work zone.  For more information on this improvement project, please contact Kimberly Qualls, Northeast Kansas Public Affairs Manager, at (785) 640-9340 or Howard Lubliner, Field Engineering Administrator, at (913) 764-0987.

hwc-logo-219.gifKU Athletic officials have met with KU Parking and a new procedure is now in place for the remainder of the season in hopes of eliminating parking problems in the Allen Fieldhouse garage on Women's Basketball gamedays.

Starting this evening, KU Parking officials will be on hand at the entrance of the garage before the game to offer toll parking. Parking will be available for $5 per car in this garage.  This is a cash-only fee. The gates at the exit of the garage will be lifted following halftime for easy dismissal. Anyone with a KU issued Allen Fieldhouse Garage parking permit will still be able to park in the garage without fee.  Furthermore, all other lots surrounding Allen Fieldhouse will remain free parking on weekends and weeknights (starting at 5:30 pm).

We apologize to anyone that was involved in the exit delay on Saturday and hope this new process eliminates delays for the remainder of the season. Should you have any questions, please contact the KU Parking Department at 785-864-7275.

Thumbnail image for Armstrong_Finger_04202011.jpgFour shot put champions who competed in the Kansas Relays Downtown Shot Put event in April finished in the top six of the Samsung Diamond League series which concluded last month in Brussels. The Samsung Diamond League is an annual series of track and field meetings that pit the world's top athletes against one another for a points race that lasts over 14 events.

Dylan Armstrong, who won the Downtown Shot Put competition last spring, took home the coveted Diamond League crown with a total of 17 points earned during the 14-week series. The Canadian has had an outstanding season in 2011. In addition to winning the Kansas Relays shot put event in Lawrence, he has won five different titles in international competition, has notched a career-best throw of 22.21 meters (72-10.50 ft.), a Canadian national record. He was also the runner-up at the World Championships in September.

Other downtown throwers who made the top six of the Diamond League standings included Reese Hoffa, who finished second in the summer series, just one point behind the winner, Armstrong. The U.S.'s Hoffa finished second in the 2011 Downtown event as well.

Finishing right behind Hoffa in third place in the Diamond League series was another American, Christian Cantwell, who collected 11 points over the 14 events. While Cantwell didn't compete in the Downtown shot put due to injury, he was on hand to lend support and commentary for those participating. Cantwell, who attended college at Missouri, won two events in the Diamond league and had a season's best throw of 22.07 meters (72-04.50 ft.). He also finished fourth at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, in September.

Finishing in a tie for fourth in the Diamond League series was American Ryan Whiting with five points. Whiting took fifth at the Downtown event.

The Samsung Diamond League is composed of 14 of the best invitational track and field meetings in the world. The meetings are spread across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, and compose the top tier of the IAAF's global one-day meeting competition structure.

This series of 14 meetings, which began in 2010, showcase 32 event disciplines which are carefully distributed amongst the meetings. In each of the 32 event disciplines there is a "Diamond Race" with points available throughout the 14-meet season. Winners of each Diamond Race receive a 40,000 USD cash prize as well as a spectacular diamond trophy, but more importantly, they will have shown season-long consistency to earn the unchallenged honor of being Number 1 in the world.

Representing the event's Co-Honorary Chair Cindy Self's team were O'Neil, Gurley, KU baseball head coach Ritch Price and men's basketball director of operations Barry Hinson. Playing a scramble format, the KU foursome scored a 58, which placed them second in the event.

Gurley blasted his tee shot 323 yards on the 14th hole, which measures 512 yards. Using a hybrid club, O'Neil then made the shot of the day from 189 yards out.

"We didn't see it go in but, we knew it was close," O'Neil said. "We went up to the hole and walked around, then Barry Hinson found it in the cup."

"We had a great time for a great cause," Hinson said. "Erin's shot just made the day that much better."

In her first season playing in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), former Kansas women's basketball player Danielle McCray has helped the Connecticut Sun to a berth in the 2011 playoffs. McCray and the Sun will open the first round of the postseason versus Atlanta on Friday, Sept. 16 on the Suns' home court in Uncasville, Conn.

McCray.jpg"It's amazing right now. The fact that we haven't been (to the playoffs) in a long time and to be a part of this team that goes the first year I come, it means a lot," said McCray. "We're all excited, our coaches are very excited, it's just a different atmosphere now."

McCray contributed five points in nearly 16 minutes of floor time during Connecticut's 69-63 win versus the New York Liberty Sunday night to clinch a spot in the WNBA playoffs after a two-year hiatus from the postseason. The Olathe, Kan., native and former All-American has appeared in 34 games for the Sun this season, including 23 starts, and is averaging 5.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

Asked what the team has been focusing on this week heading into Friday's contest McCray answered, "Guarding Atlanta. They are a really athletic team. We have to stop Angel McCoughtry, who is number one (in the WNBA) in scoring. We need to keep her under control."

Drafted by Connecticut with the seventh overall pick in 2010, McCray spent her first professional season with Rishon Lezion of the Israeli Women's League while coming back from a knee injury, which she suffered in her final season at Kansas.
