Summer Bridge Program for Incoming Student-Athletes
The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) permits the University of Kansas to provide incoming student-athletes with athletically-related financial aid during the summer preceding their first full-time term of enrollment. The following terms must apply: a) The recipient shall be admitted to the University of Kansas in accordance with regular, published entrance requirements; b) The recipient shall enroll in a minimum of six hours of academic course work (other than physical education activity courses) that is acceptable degree credit toward any of KU's degree programs. Remedial, tutorial and noncredit courses may be used to satisfy the minimum six-hour requirement, provided the courses are considered by KU to be prerequisites for specific courses acceptable for any degree program and are given the same academic weight as other courses offered by KU; c) The recipient is expected to enroll in coursework, which covers the complete eight-week summer session. Students wishing to enroll for a session less than the full summer term must have approval from the respective sport supervisor; d) The recipient is expected to complete all coursework in which he or she is enrolled. Students wishing to withdraw from any coursework must receive prior approval from the respective sport supervisor; and e) The recipient must adhere to all NCAA bylaws governing the summer bridge program. The opportunity to enroll in the summer session, preceding a student's first full-time term of enrollment, is available to all students at the University of Kansas and the institution provides a broad offering of courses in many degree programs for students who attend summer school. Students who attend the summer session are expected to adhere to high standards of academic integrity during this term, just as they are during the Fall and/or Spring semesters. The University of Kansas believes that students who begin their collegiate studies in summer school receive a significant advantage toward their academic careers. Therefore, KU endorses the NCAA Summer Bridge Program, with the guidelines listed above, as an option for all incoming scholarship student-athletes. Adopted - March 2005 |
