LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self announced Wednesday the signing of guard Tyrel Reed of Burlington (Kan.) High School to a national letter of intent to play at KU.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Coached by his father, Stacy, Reed (6-3, guard) averaged 23.6 points per game as a junior last season for Burlington High School. Reed is a combined 68-2 while at Burlington and was a member of the Wildcats’ 3A state championship team his freshman season.

“We’re very excited about signing Tyrel,” Self said. “He is a 6-3 combo guard that can play both on the ball and off the ball because he is an excellent shooter. We’ve been recruiting Tyrel for the past three years, and because of our limited scholarship situation had been encouraging him to sign in the spring. We felt there would be a scholarship available then. Since we did not sign a wing in the fall, we did everything we could to try and convince Tyrel to sign now. This is a great signing for us, an exciting day for Tyrel, his family and everyone that supports Kansas basketball.”

Reed is ranked the 14^th best point guard by Rivals.com and in the top 100 players overall. For the past two years Reed has played AAU basketball for KC Pump N’ Run. He chose Kansas over Missouri, Oklahoma, Stanford and Missouri State.

“Tyrel has only lost two games in his (high school) basketball career,” Self said. “He lost in the state tournament last year at Burlington and I know his goal is to win a state championship this year. Stacy, his father, has done a great job coaching him and preparing him for the next level. We are excited to get another coach’s son in the program.”

Reed is the second fall signee for KU and joins center Cole Aldrich from Jefferson High School in Bloomington, Minn., who inked Nov. 8 with the Jayhawks.
