Jayhawks Conclude Play at ITA Central Regionals

NORMAN, Okla. – Anastasija Trubica defeated Paula Rincon-Otero of Minnesota in consolation rounds, while three Jayhawks took their opponents to the third set as Kansas concluded competition at ITA Central Regionals at the Headington Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Trubica won her match 6-4, 6-2 for her second win of the weekend but represented KU’s only winner on Sunday as Dylan Windom and Paulina Los lost in super tiebreakers and Maria Belen Ludueña lost in three sets. Maria Jose Cardona lost in straight sets to Petra Niedermayerova, Kansas State’s nationally ranked No. 1 singles player.
“I felt like today there were some good things,” said Head Coach Todd Chapman. “We struggled this fall in some pressure situations, three in the super tiebreaker and one in the third set today. Something we struggled all fall with was learning to win in those situations and I feel like at times we wait for bad things to happen and expect that level to drop. We’ve got to continue to learn from our experiences, and look to get better. “
Windom lost in her first set to Minnesota’s Yuliana Umanets, 3-6, but rebounded in the second winning, 6-2, pushing the match into a super tiebreaker where Windom fell, 10-6. Paulina Los battled Whitney Wofford of Oklahoma losing in her second of three super tiebreakers of the weekend. Ludueña fell to Tereza Brichacova of Minnesota in the singles main draw, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Niedermayerova defeated Cardona in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
“I felt like (Niedermayerova) played the pressure situation better,” said Chapman. “That’s why she’s ranked what she is in the nation and one of the top players in the country. We have to learn to embrace those situations and not be afraid of them and trust that we’re good enough. I believe they’re good enough, the girls have to believe they’re good enough. I think when we do that we’ll definitely raise our game
Up next the Jayhawks will tackle the Houston Invitational in Houston, Texas Nov.1 -3.
“I felt like several of the girls were learning to become much tougher on the court,” said Chapman. “Embracing the mentality of being disciplined. There are a lot of things our coaching staff saw we need to work on. The girls themselves saw what they were struggling with and some of our weaknesses. We have a couple weeks to work on those, learn a little bit and get a little better for Houston.”
