Boyd's Career-High Leads Jayhawks Past SIU-Edwardsville

For the second game in a row, junior guard Asia Boyd set a career-high in points with 18 against SIUE.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – A jumper from SIU-Edwardsville’s Allyssa Decker opened the contest between the Jayhawks and the Cougars, but that was the first points and only lead for SIUE as Kansas retaliated with 16-straight points, setting the tone for KU’s, 72-56, win on Wednesday night, inside historic Allen Fieldhouse.

Junior guard Asia Boyd set her second career-high this week with 18 points to help Kansas (2-0) top SIU-Edwardsville (0-2). The Detroit, Mich. native, also set career-best marks in field-goals made (six), and three-point field goals made (four), to set the tone for the Jayhawks offensively.

Boyd opened the contest with KU’s first five points to kick-start a 16-0 run. Another 7-0 spurt from the Jayhawks later in the frame helped them to a comfortable, 36-20, lead at the break. Junior forward Chelsea Gardner spearheaded the Kansas attack in the first half, tallying 14 points to lead all scorers and grabbing four rebounds. Boyd also reached double-digits in the first half, connecting for 10 points and making both attempts from behind the arc.

Sophomore guard Lamaria Cole had a record-breaking night, tallying a career-high for steals (six) and assists (five). She also tied her career best of eight points. Cole excited fans with a steal and a fast break down the court to the bucket at the beginning of the second frame, adding to her career-best steals mark in the game. Another Jayhawk hit a season-high, when freshman guard Dakota Gonzalez notched a season-best six points.

Kansas controlled the game on the defensive side of the court as well, forcing their first shot-clock violation of the year, turning the Cougars over three minutes into the first frame. The Jayhawks followed that up with a second shot-clock violation with six minutes remaining. In total the Jayhawks forced 26 SIUE turnovers.

With just under three minutes left in the contest freshman guard Dylan Gonzalez checked into the game, igniting Kansas’ ‘Fresh Five’ and marking the first time this season all five freshman were on the court at the same time.

SIUE was led by sophomore guard Coco Moore who recorded 17 points, to lead the Cougars in points. Sophomore guard/forward Jessie Wendt was right behind her, hitting 16 points. Wendt also hit SIUE’s only two treys of the night.

With Wednesday’s win, the Jayhawks remain undefeated against the Cougars in their second meeting, bringing the all-time series record to 2-0.

TEAM NOTES

After SIU-Edwardsville scored the first bucket of the game, the Jayhawks went on a 16-0 run from the 18:37 until the 13:23 mark in the first half.
During the run, Kansas forced its first shot-clock violation of the year, turning the Cougars over with 17:00 minutes left in the first half. KU forced another shot-clock violation with 6:08 left in the first half.
Less than two minutes later, the Jayhawks used a 7-0 run starting at the 11:52 mark to extend the lead to 11, 23-12, with 7:04 left in the first half.
With 2:58 left in the contest freshman guard Dylan Gonzalez checked into the game to join fellow newcomers guard Dylan Gonzalez, forward Jada Brown, forward Caelynn Manning-Allen and guard Keyla Morgan, to mark the first time this season that all five freshmen have been on the court at the same time.
