TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State Sun Devil’s snapped Kansas’ four-game unbeaten streak Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Jayhawks 4-0 in the final match of the Sun Devil Classic. The loss marked the first time in 36 matches Kansas has allowed four or more goals in a game.
The loss dropped Kansas to 3-2-1 on the season, while Arizona State moves to 4-1 in their 2013 campaign.
Arizona State came out of the gates fast as the Sun Devils controlled possession for the majority of the first 10 minutes of play. The host team saw its first shot of the game make it to the back of the KU net in the seventh minute when an ASU cross toward the far post was headed in by Devin Marshall.
Despite five first half corner kicks the Kansas offense had trouble establishing attacks in the opening 45, amassing just three shots, none of which were on goal.
On the other end the ASU offense made life tough for the Kansas backline throughout the opening half as junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud faced seven shots and tallied three saves.
The Sun Devils kept the pressure on early in the second half, digging the Jayhawks in an even deeper hole within the first eight minutes of the second frame. In the 50th minute, KU freshman Aurélie Gagnet was whistled for a foul inside the Jayhawk box, prompting the ASU penalty kick. The Sun Devil’s Cali Farquharson converted on the free shot at goal, putting her team up 2-0.
Just three minutes later Arizona State struck again after Farquharson found an open Blair Alderson who sent one in from about 25 yards out. The strong strike got passed Stroud and gave the Sun Devils a commanding 3-0 lead with nearly 40 minutes still to play.
ASU tallied its fourth goal of the match when Marshall notched her second score of the day with a right-footed strike the slid in just below the KU crossbar. The goal marked the first time in 36 matches that the Jayhawks have allowed four or more opponent goals.
Leading the Jayhawks was sophomore Courtney Dickerson, who posted three shots in 49 minutes of play. Sophomore Hanna Kallmaier and junior Kelsey Lyden were the only Jayhawks to tally shots on goal, putting in one a piece.
Stroud ended her day with eight saves, one shy of her career high. The junior faced 23 Arizona State shots, the most given up by the Jayhawks this season.
Kansas will return to Lawrence to host the Jayhawk Invitational, Sept. 13-15. KU will take on San Diego Friday in the match the will be televised on Metro Sports and ESPN3.com. The Jayhawks and Toreros are slated to kickoff at 4:30 p.m.
