Ludueña and Hinton Lead Kansas on Day Two of ITA Central Regionals

LAWRENCE Kan. – Kansas senior Maria Belen Ludueña advanced in both singles and doubles to lead the Jayhawks on the second day of actions at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Regionals hosted in Stillwater, Oklahoma on the campus of Oklahoma State University.

Smith Hinton and Ludueña were the lone Jayhawks to advance to the third round of play in the singles main draw. Ludueña also teamed with junior Maria Jose Cardona to move into the second round of doubles action. Ludueña and Cardona defeated Nebraska doubles team Mackenna Maddox and Lisa Anderson 8-3.

In singles Hinton defeated Jordan Eggleston from Drake 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. Ludueña came out on top defeating Tamara Slijepceic from Arkansas State 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. She then advanced by besting Yang Pang from Arkansas 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Freshmen Smith Hinton and Madison Harrison also advanced in doubles play as they beat a doubles team from Oklahoma, Ann Pepper and Malene Stripp,    8-7.

“Today we had some ups and downs,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “As a team, I felt like we left some wins out on the court in singles and doubles. We need to work on competing throughout the match instead of in spurts.  Individually, we had some outstanding performances. Maria Belen Ludueña had a great day and it’s good to see she is still competing in both singles and doubles.”

Ludueña, Cardona, Hinton and Harrison will return to action at the ITA Central Regionals Saturday at 9 a.m.
