LAWRENCE, Kan.- Picture perfect weather on the Kaw combined with a wonderful turnout led to an overall great day for Kansas rowing and its second annual Jayhawk Jamboree.

Fans lined the banks of the Kansas River, enjoying the opportunity to attend the second regatta held in Lawrence since 2005. Tailgates even broke out for those not partaking in the variety of concessions, including traditional cotton candy, funnel cakes and a Free State Brewery stand. More than 2,000 showed up to party at the Jamboree.

“It’s really turned into a great event,” said Kansas head coach Rob Catloth. “It’s something we’ll look forward to having every year.”

Kansas began the afternoon with a seventh-place finish in the Varsity Eight race with a time of 13:50.15. Rowing in the boat for KU were seniors Jennifer Hartzler, Brooke Thuston, Claudijah Lever, junior Maggie Duncan, and sophomores  Lexie Lanphere, Kat Young, Allison Schaaf, Maddie Irelan and (coxswain) Kenzie Obrochta. Following behind them was boat (A) consisting of seniors Julia Alvey and Erin Brogan (16:10.89). Hartzler and Lanphere finished in third (16:41.44), while Young and sophomore Emma O’Neill placed fourth (16:49.22). Rounding out the group in fifth place with a time of 16:59.16 were sophomores Olivia Loney and Emily Ruble.

“I’m happy with how we raced today,” said Catloth. “I think our freshmen did really well and overall we did pretty well. We’ll look to improve from here out.”

The day of racing concluded with the Women’s Novice Four. Kansas (A) finished in third (16:12.19). Powering the boat were Klaver, Dittberner, Hornick, Fullerton and (coxswain) Coolidge. KU (B) posted a sixth-place finish and a time of 17:05.66.

Overall, the Kansas coaching staff believed the racing, and event as a whole were a great success.
