LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior Ben Welle looks to continue his solid fall season as the KU men’s golf will return to the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational at the Butterfield Trail Golf Course in El Paso, Texas, Oct. 24-26.
Last year at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational, the Jayhawks finished fourth behind San Jose State, Colorado and winner New Mexico State. KU shot a three-round 854 (-10), one stroke behind San Jose State.
Welle led KU last year at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational, where he tied for sixth with a three-round score 209 (-7). Welle is coming off of a top-10 finish at the Sagamore Preview, Oct. 13-14, in Noblesville, Indiana, where he tied for eighth with a two-round score 144 (E).
“I feel really good about my game right now and returning to a course that I am familiar with and did well last year really gets me excited for Friday,” said Welle who leads KU with a 72.5 per round average this fall.
For the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational , the KU team will consist of senior Logan Philley, juniors Welle and Connor Peck, sophomore Chase Hanna and freshmen Brock Drogosch and Gary Daoust. One of the freshmen will play as an individual in the event.
“Ben was a huge help last year. This course sets up well for him and he drives the ball fairly straight,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “If you can get the ball in the fairway there, you can take advantage of a lot of the holes.”
In their last outing, Hanna tied for 20th finish at the Sagamore Preview, where he shot a two-round 149 (+5), while Philley finished tied for 26th with a two-round 150 (+6). Hanna averages 73.1 shots per round this fall, while Philley is at 73.4, Drogosch at 74.0 and Daoust at 76.3.
The Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational will be played on a 7,307-yard, par-72 course at the Butterfield Trail Golf Course with 18-holes a day format on Oct. 24, 25 and 26. Kansas will be competing against Air Force, Colorado State, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, San Jose State, Texas State, UMKC, Utah, host UTEP, UTSA and Western New Mexico.
