LAWRENCE, Kan. –The Kansas men’s golf team, led by two top-10 finishers sophomore Chase Hanna and Junior Ben Welle, sits in Fourth after day one at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational at the Butterfield Trail Golf Course in El Paso, Texas.

Hanna led KU ending the first day carding five birdies and two eagles, shooting his Kansas career low 66 (-6), to finish fifth.  Welle carded three birdies and two eagles, also shooting his KU career low 67 (-5) to finish tied for sixth.  The leader of the event is Issac Merry, who shot 63 (-9), two-strokes ahead of the runner-up Mitch Tucker 65 (-7).

“Chase and Ben played well, and Gary Daoust played well in the individual spot,” head coach Jamie Bermel said.  “We made a lot of birdies and seven eagles today, but way too many bogeys.  We had perfect scoring conditions as there was little wind.”

Kansas freshman Gary Daoust played as individual finishing tied for 16th shooting his KU career low 69 (-3). Redshirt freshman Brock Drogosch shot a 71 (-1) finishing tied for 30th. Followed by junior Connor Peck, he shot a 72 (E), including two eagles and three birdies to finish tied for 40th.  Senior Logan Philley shot a 74 (+2) to finish tied for 59th.

UTSA leads the event with a 267 (-21), followed by New Mexico State with 272 (-16).  UMKC is in third with 275 (-13), with Kansas behind by one-stroke 276 (-12).

“We need to stay aggressive on Saturday as the conditions are going to be the same,” Bermel said.
