Kansas’ GSR Reaches Record High Again

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Jayhawk student-athletes posted their best single-year score and the Kansas Athletics department tied its Graduation Success Rate (GSR) record for the second time in the last three years in numbers released by the NCAA Tuesday afternoon. Kansas logged an 85 percent GSR, up one point from a year ago, as four Jayhawk teams posted perfect scores.

Kansas saw its best single-year GSR (an 82 percent for the 2007-08 freshman class) and has established or tied a multi-year departmental record in four of the last five years.

For the third year in a row, Kansas men’s basketball posted a perfect four-year GSR, meaning for a four-year average all student-athletes either graduated or left the program in good academic standing. The men’s golf program achieved the feat in back-to-back seasons, and softball and women’s golf also posted perfect scores. This year’s numbers reflect a four-year average for students who entered college from 2004-07.

There is no NCAA penalty for a poor GSR score and conversely no reward, but the number provides a more accurate snapshot of student-athlete academic performance than the federal graduation rate. The Graduation Success Rate includes transfer students and student-athletes who leave in good academic standing, unlike the federal rate, which does not count transfers. The GSR and federal rate calculations measure graduation over six years from initial college enrollment.

Nine out of 14 Kansas programs with scores – cross country and track are grouped together – posted 85 percent GSRs or higher.
