Kansas Tabbed to Finish Eighth in Big 12 Preseason Poll
IRVING, Texas. – Kansas women’s basketball was voted to finish the 2014-15 conference slate in eighth place by the Big 12 coaches as announced Wednesday morning.
Texas took the top of honor of being named the 2014-15 preseason front-runner, which hasn’t happened since 2004-05, with five first-place votes. 2013-14 Co-Big 12 Champions Baylor and West Virginia were voted in second and third place, respectively, with two first-place votes each. Oklahoma State was selected fourth and received one first-place vote. Oklahoma was next at No. 5, followed by Iowa State in sixth place. TCU, Kansas, Kansas State and Texas Tech rounded out the poll.
The 2013-14 campaign marked the fifth-straight year the Big 12 led the nation in percentage of teams in the NCAA field. The conference has led or tied for the nation’s top spot in seven of eight years dating back to 2007. The Big 12 also led the nation in average home attendance for the 15th-consecutive year.
The Jayhawks return four starters from a year ago including Preseason All-Big 12 selection Chelsea Gardner and 2013-14 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honoree Natalie Knight. KU has seven letterwinners returning to the hardwood along with welcoming five newcomers.
Kansas opens the season with an exhibition contest against Fort Hays State on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m., inside Allen Fieldhouse.
