Kansas Rowing Caps off Spring Training at Clemson Regatta
LAWRENCE, Kan.- The University of Kansas rowing team wrapped up its spring training with a trio of top-three finishes at the Clemson Regatta, including a second-place finish in the Second Varsity Four.
The Jayhawks opened the day with a third-place finish (7:24.10) in the Third Varsity Eight race. Powering the boat were freshmen Kathleen Brady, Bailey Brandon, Kate Cropp, Kylee Dewey, coxswain Mallory Miller, Christina Granzow, Madison Hovis, Olivia Loney and Allison Schaaf.
KU went on to compete in the First Varsity Eight where they finished in fifth place (7:05.13). Rowing for Kansas were seniors Caitlyn Decker, Elizabeth Scherer, Kaylee Sextro, Alexandra Torquemada, coxswain Catherine Clements, juniors Claudijah Lever and Brooke Thuston, sophomore Maggie Duncan and freshman Maddie Irelan.
The Kansas coaching staff believes the spring training trip was a success and will ultimately pay dividends for the team later on in the season.
“We had a good week of training, but I think our women rowed a bit tired today,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “I thought the Fours (First and Second Varsity) rowed well today. We need to get some rest and be prepared to compete at the Sunflower Showdown.”
Next up was the Second Varsity Eight race where the Jayhawks earned fourth place (7:11.50) overall. Members of the boat included seniors Kelsie Fiss, Tearson ‘Jade’ Lambkins, Jessica Miller, juniors Julia Alvey, Angie Flores-Rodriguez, Allie Griffin, sophomore coxswain Mary Slattery, and freshmen Emma O’Neill and Katherine Young.
The day continued for KU with a third-place finish (7:45.8) in the First Varsity Four. Rowing for the Jayhawks were seniors Carly Iverson, Jessica Jacob, coxswain Abbey Lozenski, Emma Umbarger and sophomore Tessa Scott.
The final race of the day was Kansas’ best as the Second Varsity Four finished in second place (7:52.50). Members of the boat were juniors Erin Brogan, Alexa Fowlkes, Jennifer Hartzler, coxswain Sarah Lasini and sophomore Jackie Adamle.
Other teams competing at the Clemson Regatta included Buffalo, No. 19 Clemson, Duke, Iowa and Purdue.
The Jayhawks will next make the short-trip down I-70 for the annual Sunflower Showdown against the Kansas State Wildcats on March 29 in Kansas City, Kan.
