Kansas’ NCAA Champion Track Team to Visit White House

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas Women’s Track & Field team will journey to Washington, D.C. and the White House on Monday, March 10 it was announced Friday evening. The Jayhawks, who claimed the program’s first NCAA title last June in Eugene, Ore., will be recognized by President Barack Obama in a ceremony to be held on the south lawn after taking a tour of the White House Monday afternoon.
 
“We couldn’t be more excited and honored to have gotten this invitation,” said head coach Stanley Redwine. “What that team did last summer was great accomplishment and it’s humbling for that accomplishment to be recognized by the President. It will be a great experience for those young women and something they will remember for a lifetime.”
 
The 2013 Jayhawks won the NCAA Outdoor title in runaway fashion last June after amassing 60 points over the four-day meet, beating the rest of the field by 16 points for the program’s first national championship. The team was led by senior Andrea Geubelle, who was the team’s top scorer with her 16 points after runner-up finishes in the long jump and triple jump as well as sophomore Lindsay Vollmer, who claimed the NCAA title in the heptathlon.
 
Twelve of the Jayhawk athletes who were a part of the national championship run will journey to Washington, D.C. The group will be one of 19 2013-13 NCAA Division I Championship teams to be recognized by the president in the ceremony to be held on the south lawn.
