CLEARWATER, Fla. – Kansas shortstop Chaley Brickey launched her third home run in as many games, this time a two-run shot in the first inning to lead the Jayhawks to a 4-1 win over Utah Saturday in the Under Armour Showcase at the E.C. Moore Softball Complex.
After Alex Jones slapped a one-out infield single and stole second in the bottom of the first inning, Brickey sent them both home with her fifth home run of the season on a shot over the leftfield fence.
“(Chaley) is seeing the ball well and is doing a good job of attacking good pitches,” head coach Megan Smith said. “That was a good way for us to start off the game. She really jump-started our offense.”
Utah (9-7) put together a pair of singles in the third inning to score its only run. The two hits were half of the game total off of Jayhawk starting pitcher Alicia Pille. The KU junior improved to 5-2 on the season by scattering four hits over seven innings without a walk and six strikeouts to earn the win.
“Pille came out determined,” Smith said. “She threw extremely well (Friday) and had that mental lapse in the last inning. Today she came out in the last inning and was ready to go, mentally tough and went right at them.”
Kansas (14-7) added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning. Brickey doubled with one out to start the KU offense, while Maddie Stein followed with a single to put runners on the corners. After Harli Ridling grounded out to the pitcher it looked like the Utes might escape the inning. However, Chanin Naudin ripped a double down the leftfield line to score both Brickey and Stein for the 4-1 Jayhawk lead.
“Chanin is very poised up at the plate and battles,” Smith said. “She’s really good at not taking one at bat to the next. She was locked in and came through for us.”
KU finished with eight hits in the game and Brickey led the way with her 2-for-3 effort. Kansas will be back in action Sunday for its final game of the Under Armour Showcase. The Jayhawks will face LIU Brooklyn at 8 a.m. CT.
