Kansas Rowing Completes Day One at Lake Natoma Invite

LAWRENCE, Kan.- The University of Kansas rowing team competed against the most elite competition it has faced all season as six top-20 teams made their way to the Lake Natoma Invite.

The First Varsity Eight began the day for KU as they earned a third-place finish (6:56.6) behind No. 6 Brown University and No. Stanford. Rowing for the Jayhawks were senior coxswain Catherine Clements, Caitlyn Decker, Tearson ‘Jade’ Lambkins, Elizabeth Scherer, Alexandra Torquemada, juniors Claudijah Lever, Brooke Thuston, sophomore Maggie Duncan and freshman Maddie Irelan.

“I thought we competed better in the morning session than we did in the afternoon,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “Our Second Varsity Four and Novice boats rowed well, but as a team we didn’t perform to our own expectation.”

The day continued with the Second Varsity Eight race which saw Kansas finish third overall (7:01.3). Powering the boat were seniors Jessica Jacob, Kaylee Sextro, Emma Umbarger, juniors Julia Alvey, Erin Brogan, Allie Griffin, sophomores Alexa Fowlkes, coxswain Mary Slattery and freshman Emma O’Neill.

The Jayhawks then willed their way to a third-place finish (7:45.7) in the First Varsity Four competition. Members of the boat included seniors Kelsie Fiss, Carly Iverson, coxswain Abbey Lozenski, Jessica Miller and sophomore Tessa Scott.

Kansas earned another third-place finish (7:51.7) out of four teams in the second heat of the Second Varsity Four race. The five-member boat included senior Meghan Cahill, juniors Angie Flores-Rodriguez, Jennifer Hartzler, coxswain Sarah Lasini and sophomore Jackie Adamle.

Day one of the invite saw the Jayhawks First Novice Eight claim second place (7:26.5) overall. Crewing the boat were freshmen Bailey Brandon, Danielle Gibson, Christina Granzow, Madison Hovis, Lexie Lanphere, Olivia Loney, coxswain Kenzie Obrochta, Allison Schaaf and Katherine Young.

“We get to race a couple Conference USA opponents tomorrow,” Catloth said. “I expect us to come out and take the next step in preparation for the championship season.”

The Jayhawks will continue with day two of the Lake Natoma Invite on Sunday as they close out the 2014 regular season.
