NORMAN, Okla. – Senior Ashley Newman collected a Kansas-high two hits against No. 15 Oklahoma, but the Sooners proved to be too much shutting out the Jayhawks, 8-0, Saturday evening at Marita Hynes Stadium.

Newman, a Salina, Kan., native led KU’s offense with two hits, however, Oklahoma capitalized on big offensive innings in the second and fourth frames totaling seven runs taking a commanding lead. Kansas (28-13, 3-3 Big 12) loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but OU halted the rally before a Jayhawk could cross the plate.

Junior Beth Wilson got the starting nod in the final game of the series, which is her first start in Crimson and Blue. She pitched three and third innings, while striking out three and giving up five hits.

Oklahoma’s offense struck in the second inning and took a 3-0 lead on four hits. Javen Henson drove in the first run with a double, while Erin Miller followed with a single driving in two more runs.

The Jayhawks threatened in the fourth inning with two walks, but Oklahoma’s ace Kelsey Stevens ended the inning before KU could get on the board. Stevens struck out three and allowed two hits in the five inning complete-game shutout.

The Sooners extended their lead, 7-0, in the fourth inning with four runs. Kansas gave up three costly walks that drove in runs and a fourth run scored on a fielder’s choice.

Junior Alicia Pille tossed one inning and struck out one, while giving up three hits and one run. Pille ended the fourth inning with a K. Freshman Sophia Templin also made an appearance, her second of the weekend and third of the season.

Designated player Lily Behrmann led off the fifth inning with a walk and fellow freshman Taylor McElhaney put another Jayhawk runner on base after getting hit by a pitch. Newman recorded her second hit of the game to load the bases. Oklahoma ended the inning leaving the bases full of Jayhawks and halting a Kansas comeback.
