Levonowich Set to Compete in U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s golfer Minami Levonowich will be competing in the 39th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links (WAPL) Championship at the Home Course, July 14-19, in DuPont, Washington.

The KU senior-to-be who grew up in Europe and now calls Houston, Texas, home qualified for the WAPL by finishing first in a 17-golfer field with a 71 (-1) at Drumm Farm Golf Club in Independence, Missouri,  on May 27, one week after competing for Kansas at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa.

“I am very excited for this experience and I know it will be a big field.” Levonwich said who transferred to KU from Kennesaw State in spring 2012. “I know a lot of my friends who I haven’t seen since I transferred here are going to play there, so I’m very excited to see them.”

The WAPL Championship will consist 156 golfers competing in two rounds of stroke play July 14-15. The top 64 scores from stroke play advance to 18-hole match play competition with the final match being contested over 36 holes.

“I have played in this format before” Levonowich said. “The Women’s Western was a great example of this and I have played in that tournament a couple of times.”

In 2013-14, Levonowich played a major role in what many will say was KU’s best season in women’s golf history earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional and advancing to the NCAA Championship. She was third on the KU squad with a 76.31 stroke average in 2013-14, including five top-20 finishes.
