Wallace Returns to KU Women's Basketball Staff as Assistant

LAWRENCE, Kan. –Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson announced Thursday that Steve Wallace will return to the women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach. Wallace previously served as the graduate assistant for the Jayhawks from 2007-09 and will replace Shay Robinson

“We’re very excited to announce that Steve has rejoined our program as an assistant coach,” said Henrickson. “It’s great to have a KU alum on staff and to have someone that is familiar with our program.

“From a player development standpoint, Steve is a great teacher of the game, who brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the gym. Steve is great at building relationships when it comes to recruiting. He has a tireless work ethic and a passion for the game. We’re happy to have him on board working with the guards.”

Wallace spent the past two seasons as the head boys’ coach at Piper High School in Kansas City. He guided the Pirates to a 32-13 record in two seasons and a state tournament appearance. Wallace also mentored five players to first-team all-league honors and saw six student-athletes continue their careers at the collegiate level.

“I am so grateful and excited for the opportunity to join Bonnie and the Kansas women’s basketball staff,” said Wallace. “It will be great to be back where I started as a graduate assistant. I look forward to working with Bonnie and the Jayhawks to achieve our goals on the court and in the classroom.”

Prior to his time at Piper High School, Wallace was an assistant coach at Tennessee Tech University from 2010-11, where the Golden Eagles were crowned the Ohio Valley Regular Season Champions. Wallace also coached an All-Ohio Valley Conference First-Team selection and the Co-Defensive Player of the Year. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and in 2011, the Golden Eagles had the No. 1 recruiting class in the OVC.

Before his time with Tennessee Tech, Wallace was the Director of Basketball Operations at the University of Rhode Island (2009-10). He scouted opponents, helped with scheduling for the 2010-11 season and served as the director of the Cathy Inglese Camps. Wallace also coordinated travel, practice times and film exchange, while keeping the recruit database up-to-date.

Starting his coaching career in Lawrence, Wallace served as the graduate assistant for Kansas women’s basketball for two seasons (2007-09). His duties with the Jayhawks included post player development, team evaluation reports, opponent scouting and assisting with video breakdown and pre-practice meetings. Wallace coordinated KU’s playbook and practice drill books and was the assistant director of the Bonnie Henrickson summer camp.

Wallace earned his bachelor’s degree of science in education from Kansas in 2007 and his master’s degree of science in education from KU in 2009. He currently resides in Lawrence with his wife, Ann, who is the athletic trainer for the KU women’s basketball program. The couple welcomed their first child, Addison, in June of 2014.
