Kansas Rowers Make Great Coaches

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Excited to share their skills with the Lawrence community, the Jayhawk rowers acted as coaches at the community rowing clinic the team hosted Saturday. Kansas Athletics and the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department teamed up to host KU’s annual community learn to row event, which the maxed-out attendance deemed a success.

The clinic featured current members of the Kansas rowing team and divided them up with citizens of Lawrence that were unfamiliar with the sport. Attendees received a tour of the Kansas Boathouse at Burcham Park and practiced on the team’s ergometer machines prior to launching out onto the river in eight-person boats. By day’s end, the Kansas coaching staff were quite pleased with the results.

“It was our fourth or fifth one we’ve done. The weather really helped as we had flat water and we did some stuff inside on the rowing machines before we went outside on the water. It seemed like it was a good experience for both the community and student-athletes,” said head coach Rob Catloth. “It’s always fun to see the student-athletes embrace the opportunity to mingle and meet people from the community who are interested in their sport and teach others who may not know as much about the sport how it works and what it’s like on the water.”

The Kansas rowing team will begin its fall season on Oct. 18 when the team will host the Jayhawk Jamboree at the Kansas Boathouse, located at Burcham Park 200 Indiana Street in Lawrence.
