Kenny Perry Joins KU Football Staff as Co-Defensive Coordinator and Cornerbacks Coach

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football head coach David Beaty added the final piece of his first coaching staff as he announced the hiring of Kenny Perry as the co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Thursday. Perry, who comes to KU after spending the 2013-14 seasons on the staff at TCU, has deep ties in the state of Texas and is also known for developing his players.

“The final piece to our coaching staff is in place with the addition of Kenny Perry coming aboard as our co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach,” said Beaty. “Coach Perry is a huge key for us not only from a coaching perspective, but from a recruiting perspective as well. He is a well-respected former Texas high school football coach who was instrumental in the development of the North Texas High School Coaches Association.

“Coach Perry is the definition of relationships and development,” added Beaty. “His ability to connect with kids and get them to reach new heights in their careers is what has set him apart as one of the finest coaches in our profession.  Yes, he is a dear friend, but make no mistake, he is here because he is very talented and can help us build something we can all be proud of here at Kansas.  I’m fired up to be coaching alongside him and all of our staff.”

In 2014, Perry coached the Horned Frogs Kevin White into second-team All-Big 12 honors with Ranthony Texada named a second-team Freshman All-American. He helped lead TCU to 12-1 mark, a share of the Big 12 title and a win in the Peach Bowl.

Perry first joined the TCU football staff in March 2013 as its director of high school relations and recruiting.

Prior to his time at TCU, Perry served seven seasons (2006-12) as head football coach at Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas. Before his time at Bowie, Perry was also head coach at Haltom High School (2004-05) and Arlington Sam Houston (2000-03).

A three-time District Coach of the Year, Perry was the 2007 Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year. He was also a six-time selection as the Dallas Cowboys Coach of the Week. In 2010, Perry was selected to the Board of Directors for the Texas High School Coaches Association. He has also been the director of the North Texas High School Football Association.

A 1993 graduate of the University of Houston, Perry was a four-year letterman (1988-91) as a defensive back for the Cougars. Perry was a cornerback his freshman and sophomore seasons before being moved to safety his final two years. He also served as a graduate assistant for Houston from 1992-94, working with the special teams and defensive backs.
