Men’s Golf Leads as 12 Jayhawk Teams Earn GPAs of 3.0 or Better

LAWRENCE, Kan. – More than half of Kansas student-athletes earned a spot on the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll and men’s golf set a team record with a 3.40 combined grade point average (GPA) during the fall semester, according to the most recent data made available by the department Monday. Kansas student-athletes’ combined GPA held steady at 2.94, the same mark posted by the Jayhawks in spring 2014.

A total of 226 student-athletes earned the distinction of the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll during the fall semester for posting a GPA of 3.0 or higher. That number represents 52 percent of KU’s student-athlete population. Among those honorees were 34 Jayhawks who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA. Members of the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll will be publicly recognized at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Iowa State (Feb. 2).

Most notably among Kansas teams, the men’s golf program posted the highest team GPA with a 3.40 – a team record – and was one of six teams, including swimming and diving (3.34), soccer (3.34), women’s cross country (3.34), women’s golf (3.33), and volleyball (3.27) with a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

“We stress success in the classroom every day – it’s part of the whole equation; it’s important,” Kansas men’s golf head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We had a great finish to the fall semester academically and it’s a testament to the guys because some of them really did extremely well. There’s a few guys who are returners who really improved from last year so that’s exciting and great for our guys all around.”

Twelve Kansas teams posted GPAs of 3.0 or better during a fall semester that saw several athletics highlights as well, including NCAA Tournament appearances by soccer and volleyball, five top-5 tournament finishes each for men’s and women’s golf, and an NCAA Championship participant in cross country.
