Dobyns Garners Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week Honors

IRVING, Texas – For the third-consecutive week, a member of the Kansas soccer team was honored with a Big 12 Weekly award, however this time it was on the defensive side of the field. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Dobyns was honored as the league’s defensive player of the week, which marked the first Big 12 weekly honor of her career. The announcement made Dobyns the fourth different Jayhawk to be recognized by the conference this season.

Dobyns, who hails from Kansas City, Missouri, keyed the KU defense in the Jayhawks’ two shutouts over the weekend. In KU’s 1-0 double overtime win over Baylor Friday, she tallied five saves, all of which came in the second half or overtime. Two days later, the sophomore posted a career-high six saves in helping Kansas to a 1-0 defeat of Oklahoma. The clean sheet marked Dobyns’ fourth shutout in her last five outings and lowered her goals-against average to 0.47 in Big 12 play. Dobyns and the KU defense are now boasting an opponent scoreless streak of 303 minutes, the Jayhawks’ longest of the season.

The announcement marked the first Big 12 defender of the week earned by a Jayhawk since Kaitlyn Stroud claimed the honor on Sept. 30, 2014.

Dobyns and the rest of her KU teammates will journey to Morgantown, West Virginia this weekend to take on the No. 2-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers on Friday, Oct. 16. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Stadium is set for 6 p.m. (CT).
