Rowing Begins Season with Successful Jayhawk Jamboree

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Fans packed into Burcham Park, lining the Kansas River, to cheer the Kansas Rowing squad on to two wins and nine top-five finishes during the third annual season-opening Jayhawk Jamboree on Sunday afternoon.

Kansas began the afternoon with a first-place finish in the women’s pair race and another five top-ten finishes. Placing first was the pair of senior Maggie Duncan and junior Irelan (17:51.04). Kansas (B) placed third, boat (E) fifth, boat (C) seventh, boat (G) eighth, boat (F) ninth, boat (H) 10th, boat (I) 11th, boat (D) 12th and boat (J) 14th.

In the Novice Eight, Kansas (A) finished second, (16:18.79) rowing the boat were rookies Regan McComb, Cienna Sorell, Kristen Underhill, Lilly Stewart, Kayla Stubblefield, Victoria Snitsar, Marissa Gray, Meghan Karoly, and (coxswain) Sarah McClure. Kansas (B) finished in sixth with a time of 17:27.40, Kansas (C) finished in seventh (17:52.52), while Kansas (D) finished in 11th (18:46.94)

The Jayhawks followed up their Novice Eight race with a third-place finish by Kansas (B) boat (16:50.83) in the Varsity Four race. Rowing for Kansas was senior Tessa Scott and juniors Margaret Winter, Kenzie Klaver, Allison Schaaf, and (coxswain) Kenzie Obrochta. Kansas (A) finished fifth (16:53.32), Kansas (D) 10th (17:30.99),boat (E) 11th (17:32.88) and boat (C) 14th (17:44.40)

In the Women’s Novice Four races Kansas (A) claimed a first-place finish, (17:42.23) powering the boat were Karoly, McComb, Underhill, Sorell and (coxswain) Abby Lane. Kansas (B) finished 9th, boat (C) finished 10th and boat (D) 13th.

KU took home a second place finish in the Varsity Eight race with a time of 15:01.68. Racing for Kansas were seniors Scott and Duncan, juniors Irelan, Katherine Young, Olivia Loney, Schaaf, and sophomores Kaelyn Thierolf and BriAnna Dittberner and (coxswain) Mary Slattery. Kansas (B) finished in sixth (15:45.32), while Kansas (C) finished in eighth (16:14.90).

For the first time in its three year history the Jamboree featured a Varsity Eight 300-meter sprint race tournament . The race featured nine boats in tournament style racing. The Kansas (A) Varsity Eight boat (1:05.15) squeaked out a victory over the Kansas (B) Varsity Eight boat (1:06.17) in the semifinal. Kansas (A) advanced to battle against Tulsa (A) in the finals, which had Tulsa (1:02.88) winning the tournament over Kansas (1:03.77).

Kansas will conclude its fall portion of the schedule at the Tulsa Fall Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Nov. 6.
