Panel Highlights Opportunities for Athletes in Health Career Community
A panel of 10 health care professionals met with Kansas student-athletes in Hadl Auditorium this week as part of the Athletes in Health Career Community, another event in the series from KU Leads aiming to pair current Kansas student-athletes with former-student-athlete professionals in a particular field of interest.
Guests included several Kansas Athletics staff members, including Dr. Sheriece Sadberry, the department’s sports psychologist, who urged current Jayhawks to get connected with professionals in the industry, much like Monday’s meet-up. Del Shenkel, former professor of biology at KU, encouraged students to volunteer with research projects on campus, stating that “faculty are always looking for undergraduate students with bright minds to help.”
Other conversation topics included advice on getting experience in the industry, choosing a career path and on the general potential of the health care industry.
“The sky is the limit in the health care industry because there is so much potential no matter which career path you choose,” Andrew Brookens, recruiter for Lawrence Memorial Hospital said. “In order to be in health care you must be capable of caring for patients, understand business and so many more skills, which allows for great growth and potential.”
Representatives from several Kansas teams were in attendance, including Kansas swimming and diving senior Bryce Hinde, a senior in exercise science, who is looking at a number of opportunities including graduate school and entering the workforce.
“It was great to get learn more about all of the different aspects of the health industry,” Hinde said, “from graduate school to knowing the business side of the industry, and especially being able to make some important connections in the Jayhawk community.”
