Rychagova Comes Up Short on Day Two of 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships

NEW YORK – Kansas women’s tennis freshman Anastasiya Rychagova fought until the end in her consolation match at the 2015 the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Friday. Ultimately, the Moscow, Russia, native, lost in straight-sets to UCLA’s Catherine Harrison, 6-4, 7-5, at the USTA Bill Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.

“Anastasiya played very hard today and put herself in great positions in both sets,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “She lost a couple of big deuce games in both sets. Now that we are playing ‘no ad’ in college tennis, the match can literally come down to a couple of points. Today was one of those days and Anastasiya didn’t come out on the side she would have liked.”

Rychagova, who was the first Jayhawk to be tabbed for the prestigious singles field since the ITA began sponsoring the event in 2005, raced out to an early 4-1 lead over Harrison in the first set. Harrison then reeled off five-straight wins to take the first set, 6-4.

Rychagova rebounded from her first-set loss, opening up a 3-2 lead over Harrison in the second set. She then fell behind 5-3, before winning back-to-back games to even the score at 5-5. Harrison grinded out the win by taking the next two games and the second set, 7-5.

“The last two days have been a great learning experience for Anastasiya as she has been playing with the best players in college tennis,” said Chapman. “We are so proud of the fall semester she has produced and we now turn our sights to the spring season.”
