LAHINA, Hawaii – No. 5 Kansas opened the Championship Round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational with a stat-stuffing 123-72 win over Chaminade on Monday night at Lahina Civic Center.
KU’s offensive output marks the sixth-most points in a game in Kansas basketball history, the most points scored in the Bill Self era, and the largest margin of victory (+51) in the event’s history.
It is the most points scored by KU since defeating Maryland-Baltimore County 122-58 on Nov. 23, 1991. The previous game high for points under Coach Self was 109 against Texas Tech during the national championship season on March 3, 2008.
Seven Jayhawks reached double-figure points on Monday night, co-led by 18 points each from Wayne Selden Jr. and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk. Selden reached 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting in 24 minutes, while Mykhailiuk reached his career high in points by draining six of KU’s 15 3-point field goals on the night.
The Jayhawks shot 64 percent from the field and reached 100 points with 5:50 remaining in the contest. KU made 16 of their last 19 shots in the final 11 minutes of the game to finish the second half with 75-percent shooting accuracy.
KU’s 123 points were evenly spread out among the 13 Jayhawks who registered minutes. Devonte’ Graham had 15 points, Frank Mason III had 14, Landen Lucas had 13 and Hunter Mickelson and Perry Ellis both had 11 for the Jayhawks.
“We have done a good job of sharing the ball,” Coach Self said after the game. “The ball moved very well tonight and there were some good things that happened as a result of that. We have some things to improve execution-wise, but it was good that so many guys got a chance to play.”
Chaminade (0-3), the NCAA Division II host school from Honolulu, entered Monday’s contest averaging 14 3-point field goals per game and 96 points per game, but were held to eight treys and 72 points on 35 percent shooting. The Silverswords took almost as many 3-point field goals (33) than 2-point shots (36).
Kansas advances to the semifinals of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational bracket and will await the winner of UCLA-UNLV on Tuesday (9 p.m. Central, ESPN).
