Fonseca Diaz Heading to Ecuador to Compete in Andes Cup

Lawrence, Kan. – Though the Kansas women’s golf team has completed its fall season, freshman Ariadna Fonseca Diaz is still finding ways to get herself on the golf course, even if it does mean buying a plane ticket. She will travel to Ecuador to represent her native Venezuela from November 25-28 at the Andes Cup, an annual 36-hole match play tournament organized by the Federación Sudamericana de Golf. Fonseca Diaz was chosen to compete for Venezuela based on her outstanding performance this past year.

“I am really excited because it is one of the most important tournaments in South America,” Fonseca Diaz said. “I think playing with people who are in different stages than me is going to help me learn a lot.”

Fonseca Diaz will look to build upon an impressive fall freshman campaign at Kansas where she became the first freshman since Emily Powers in 2006 to play in all of KU’s team rounds and count all of them. She averaged 74.8 strokes per round, including three that were shot in the 60’s. Her impressive performance throughout the fall earned her two top-10 finishes, including a tie for fourth place at the Sooner Classic. Despite the fabulous start to her collegiate career, Fonseca Diaz has continued working on her game.

“I’ve been practicing by myself, hitting in the bay almost every day and chipping and putting as often as I can if the weather allows it to,” Fonseca Diaz said.

The tournament will run from Wednesday through Saturday. The first Andes Cup was held in 1944, and has since been hosted by a different participating country on a rotating basis. Colombia captured the 2014 ladies Andes Cup.
