Jayhawks Pick Up Six Wins at Friday’s Texas Tech Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas – Kansas women’s tennis opened the Texas Tech Invitational with six wins on Friday at the McLeod Tennis Center. KU picked up four wins in singles and a pair of victories on doubles courts.
 
“I thought we competed very hard today,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “We were definitely pushed in most of our matches and that is what we need. We look forward to another set of challenges tomorrow.”
 
Kansas got singles wins from senior Maria Jose Cardona, sophomore Summer Collins and freshmen Nina Khmelnitckaia and Janet Koch. Cardona topped South Florida’s Nicole Dzenga, 6-3, 6-2 and Khmelnitckaia defeated Vera Bessenova of South Florida, 6-4, 6-4. Collins and Koch each picked up three-set wins with Collins topping South Florida’s Olga Martinez, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 and Koch besting USF’s Jessica Cortes Chavez, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
 
In doubles play, Collins and Cardona teamed up for a win over Boise State’s Bobbi Oshiro and Arianna Paules Aldey, 6-4, while Koch and Khmelnitckaia knocked off Texas Tech’s Lynn Kiro and Katelyn Jackson, 6-4.
