Kansas Seeks Top-Five Finish on Final Day in Hawaii

Day Two Results

LAHINA, Hawaii – Heading into the final round of the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic on Sunday, the Kansas men’s golf team will pursue another top-five finish and look to build on top of its performance from the second round.  After shooting a first round total of 293 (+9), the Jayhawks bounced back Saturday as the team recorded a seven-over, 291, moving up seven spots on the leaderboard and in seventh place, entering the third round.

“We played solid today in pretty tough conditions,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We gave away a few strokes coming in, but moved up quite a bit. We need another good day on Sunday and see if we can move up a few more spots.”

For KU, senior Ben Welle led the team on the day, recording six birdies, which resulted in a two-under, 69, in the second round.  As a result of his play, Welle climbed up 34 spots on the leaderboard and he finds himself currently tied for 17^th place with sophomore teammate Daniel Hudson.

Coming off of a performance where he carded a 72 (+1) in the first round, Hudson shot an even, 71, on Saturday.  His 27-recorded pars up to this point in the tournament are tied for second most amongst the 102-player field.

Welle’s senior classmate, Connor Peck, also improved his placing on the individual leaderboard by 16 spots.  Peck currently sits tied for 46^th place, with a two-day total of 148 (+6), after shooting a two-over, 73, on Saturday.  He is amongst the tournament leaders in birdies recorded, placing tied for ninth in that category.

Behind Peck on the Kansas leaderboard is junior Chase Hanna who will look to improve upon his performance from Saturday.  Entering the final round, Hanna has fired a two-day total of 149 (+7), after his 77 (+6) outing on day two. 

Rounding off the Jayhawks is freshman Charlie Hillier, who shot a 76 (+10) on consecutive days now.  He will begin the third round on Sunday tied for 70^th place. 

Competing as an individual, in his first outing of the season, redshirt sophomore Brock Drogosch carded a 78 (+7) on the day and heads into the third round tied for 78^th place.
