WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – It’s winter break for the University of Kansas, but that doesn’t mean freshman women’s golfer Ariadna Fonseca Diaz has taken a break from the golf course. She, with senior teammate Yupaporn Kawinpakorn caddying for her, won the Orlando International Amateur at the 6,110-yard, 72-par Orange County National Golf Center Wednesday.

Fonseca Diaz won the tournament over 12 others after beating Alice Barbieri with a birdie in the first playoff hole. She shot 219 (+3) over three rounds in three days. This was Fonseca Diaz’s first tournament win since the HJGT Orange Lake Junior Open in April of 2015.

“It was a great confidence booster because I had prepared so much on my game. I haven’t won in a while and it was just a good thing to have going into the spring,” Fonseca said. “Having Mook there was great, we had so much fun and I learned a lot from her.”

Kawinpakorn, winner of three tournaments in the fall semester, caddied for Fonseca during the first two days of competition and believed Fonseca’s dedication to improvement would pay off.

“Ari is very talented and deserves to be a champion. She works as hard as everyone else so I had no doubt she would win today. Moreover, it was fun caddying for her for the first two days,” Kawinpakorn said. “We learned a lot from each other’s point of view, and we hope it will help us in the spring.”

Fonseca Diaz and Kawinpakorn will return to the golf course for KU at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational on March 14-15.
