Wichita, Kan. – Kansas women’s tennis had it its two-match win-streak halted Thursday evening when it fell to in-state rival No. 40 Wichita State, 6-1, at the Wichita Country Club indoor courts.
“I thought we put ourselves in some positive situations today, but we didn’t do a very good job of executing in the crucial situations,” said Kansas head coach Todd Chapman. “We were 0-6 in 7-5 or 7-6 sets. On the road against a very good team, you can’t let those slip away. Wichita State played better in those situations tonight and deserved to win.”
In doubles play, KU freshmen Smith Hinton and Madison Harrison were the first off the court as they were defeated by Gabriela Porubin and Julia Schiller from WSU 6-1, 6-1., on court two Kansas came back with a win on doubles court one as senior Maria Belen Luduena and junior Maria Jose Cardona teamed up for a 6-2 win over WSU’s Lucia Kovalova and Rebecca Pedrazzi.
In the final and deciding match in doubles action, Wichita State’s Luca Pump and Aleks Trifunovic edged Jayhawk freshmen Summer Collins and Rachel McNeely, 7-5, on court three to claim the doubles point and take 1-0 lead into singles play.
The 40th-ranked Shockers were successful in the match by winning 5-of-6 courts in singles play. KU’s lone win came on court four as Hinton knocked off Kovalova, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Luduena battled against WSU’s Pedrazzi, but eventual fell in the third set on court two, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Freshman Alexis Czapinski saw her first action of the dual-match season in singles. Czapinski faced WSU’s Trifunovic on court six, dropping a 6-3, 7-6 decision.
The Jayhawks will host their first home dual match of the season when they take on No. 49 Houston on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. First serve between the Jayhawks and Cougars is scheduled for 11 a.m.
