Ellis and Garrett Named Academic All-Big 12 First Team

IRVING, Texas – Kansas men’s basketball junior Perry Ellis and senior Christian Garrett have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, announced by the league office Wednesday.

Kansas leads the Big 12 with 52 all-time Academic All-Big 12 honorees since the inception of the conference in 1996-97. Texas is second with 48. KU has 39 Academic All-Big 12 First Team honorees and 13 second-team selections. In the Bill Self era, Kansas has had 29 student-athletes named Academic All-Big 12.

Ellis has been an Academic All-Big 12 member in each of the seasons he has been eligible for the honor. Named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team in 2013, Ellis was an academic all-league second team honoree last season. The Wichita forward has been a member of the Athletic Directors and Big 12 Commissioner honor rolls four times while at KU.

Garrett is appearing on the Academic All-Big 12 squad for the first time in his career. The Los Angeles guard will graduate from KU in May with a degree in sport management and has been a member of the Athletic Directors and Big 12 Commissioner honor rolls every semester he has been at Kansas.

First team members consist of those student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
