Kansas Rowing Opens Spring Season at Cardinal Invite

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The University of Kansas rowing team opened its spring season on Saturday at the Cardinal Invite.

Kansas competed in 10 races on the first day of competition, squaring off with opponents such as No. 2 Virginia, No. 9 Yale, No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 18 Louisville.

The Jayhawks began the morning with a third-place finish in the First Varsity Eight, crossing with a time of 6:21.022.

“It was a challenging day for us,” said Kansas head coach Rob Catloth. “In the morning we we’re facing three top-20 teams and then in the afternoon there were two top-20 teams, so it was good competition.”

Up next, Kansas placed third in the First Varsity Four with a time of 7:05.04. The Third Varsity Eight and Second Novice Eight boats placed fourth in their respective races, finishing with times of 6:31.074 and 6:28.362.

Kansas ended the morning session competing in the Second Varsity Four race, where the Jayhawks finished in third place with a time of 6:58.494.

In the afternoon portion, KU got back to work with a fourth-place finish in the First Varsity Eight ending the race with a time of 6:21.463.

Next for the Jayhawks was the First Varsity Four, where KU finished in third place with a time of 7:02.869 – nearly three seconds faster than their morning time.

The Third Varsity Eight boat gave Kansas their highest place on the day cruising to second place with 6:29.526 on the clock.

Rounding out the first day of competition were the Second Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four races, where the Jayhawks would finish fourth and third, respectively. The 2V8 finished with a time of 6:29.472 and the 2V4 boat crossed at 7:04.440

“We’re still improving on racing, which is good, but we haven’t had any water time to figure out lineups yet,” said Catloth. “We’ve been mixing up lineups and trying to figure out what works. Tomorrow we will need to perform well against Alabama and Tennessee.”

The Jayhawks will be back in action as they close out their first regatta of the spring season at the Louisville Invite Sunday morning.
