Miller to Represent Jayhawks at NCAA Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C.—After lowering three of her own school records and earning a silver medal in three individual events at the 2015 Big 12 Championships, Chelsie Miller will make her second appearance at the NCAA Championships in the Greensboro Aquatic Center, March 19-21. Miller will represent the Jayhawks in three events: the 200- and 400-yard individual medley and the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Miller will swim her first event, the 200-yard IM, on Thursday morning. Entering the event, Miller is seeded 45th with a Kansas school record time of 1:58.37. She will swim the 400-yard IM, her marquee event, on Friday morning. In 2014, Miller finished 13th in the event, and is seeded 8th this year with a time of 4:05.67. Miller’s seed time placed her second at the Big 12 Championship meet to Texas’ Madisyn Cox, who is seeded 5th in the national meet with a time of 4:05.08.

“The 200 IM will be the set up for 400 IM on Friday,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “At these big meets, it’s really important to have good swims in prelims. On Thursday, we’re going to set it up and get a good morning swim in. Then we’ll use the rest of the day to recover and come in on Friday morning geared up to do a best time in the 400 IM. That’ll set her up really well for finals at night.”

Also at the league meet, Miller placed second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:13.03, just shy of her school record and career-best time of 16:09.97 set at the NCAA Championships in 2014. She enters the 2015 event ranked 26th overall.

“Big 12’s was a big surprise,” Campbell said of Miller’s mile race. “She set the school record in the 1,000 on her way to finish the mile. She was out faster than she’s ever been, but because she lacked the preparation and wasn’t tapered going in, it caused the final time to go up a little bit. Now, being tapered and being in a championship setting, if history serves right, she should have a better mile than she did at Big 12’s . Her freestyle has been looking good and she’s looking forward to putting together three really good races.”
