Jayhawks Tied For First after Day One in Arizona

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – With redshirt freshman Brock Drogosch as co-leader, the Kansas men’s golf team sit tied for first-place after the first round of the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Arizona.
The rainy conditions during day one of the Desert Shootout did not stop the Jayhawks. Drogosch is the co-leader of the 85-golfer field as he tied his Kansas career low shooting a 66 (-6) in the first-round, carding five birdies and one eagle. Drogosch is tied with Tulsa’s Colton Staggs at 66 (-6), one stroke ahead of Nebraska’s Josh Reinertson and Iowa State’s Nick Voke who posted a score of 67 (-5).
“Brock (Drogosch) played well today and birdied the last two holes,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said.
Behind Drogosch are two more top-20 KU finishers, sophomore Chase Hanna and freshman Daniel Hudson. Hanna and Hudson both carded four birdies shooting 70 (-2) to and are tied for 14th. Jayhawk juniors Connor Peck and Ben Welle both posted a score of 72 (E) to finish tied for 25th. Redshirt freshman Jacques Wilson is playing as an individual in his first collegiate tournament. Wilson carded five birdies, shot a 70 (-2) and is tied for 14th with Hanna and Hudson.
“I thought we played pretty well and the guys kept grinding,” Bermel said. “We made five birdies in the last three-holes, which really helps the team score.”
Kansas is tied for first-place with Wichita State and two strokes ahead of Iowa State, as the second of three rounds of the Desert Shootout will be played tomorrow, March 20.
