LAFAYETTE, La. – Kansas freshman Daniel Hudson sits tied for fourth individually as the KU men’s golf team is in fifth after day one at the Louisiana Classics Invitational at the Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, Louisiana, Monday.
With 14 teams battling wet conditions at the Louisiana Classics Invitational, Illinois is leading after shooting a two-round 278-279—557 (-19). Following Illinois is host Louisiana, who shot 571 (-5). In third-place is Texas State at 574 (-2), one stroke ahead of Middle Tennessee State in fourth. Kansas sits fifth after shooting a two-round 289-288—577 (+1).
Hudson carded six birdies in the first round to finish with a 67 and tied for first heading into the event’s second round. Hudson stayed consistent with two more birdies in the afternoon. His two-round 67-73—140 (-4) is tied for fourth in the 81-golfer field heading into tomorrow’s final 18-holes.
“Daniel (Hudson) had a great first round and played solid the second round, certainly not playing like a freshman,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Daniel (Hudson) had a little trouble in the second round getting putts to drop.”
KU sophomore Chase Hanna followed Hudson carding eight birdies in day one, shooting a two-round 74-71—145 (+1) and is tied for 21st. One-stroke behind Hanna is KU redshirt freshman Brock Drogosch who shot 146 (+2) and tied for 26th. Junior Ben Welle carded a two-round 76-72—148 (+4) to finish tied for 43rd. Playing as an individual, freshman Spencer Painton shot a two-round 76-70—146 (+2) and is tied with Drogosch and eight other golfers for 26th. Middle Tennessee State’s Payne Denman and Illinois’ Thomas Detry are tied for the tournament lead with a two-round 137 (-7).
“We played a very wet golf course, but the guys played pretty well. The team had a few sloppy double bogeys, but we were much sharper than last week,” Bermel said. “Illinois is out in front but there are a lot of teams bunched together after them.”
Kansas looks to move up the leaderboard and finish strong in the final 18-holes of the Louisiana Classics Invitational on Tuesday, March 3.
