SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Kansas women’s golf team lost its first-round battle to the California, 3-2, at the SDSU Farms Invitational match-play event at the Farms Golf Club in San Diego Monday.

Against Cal, Kansas was able to get a strong performance out of junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn who defeated Marthe Wold, 5 and 3, meaning Kawinpakorn was ahead of Wold by five holes with three holes remaining in her round. Kansas senior Gabriella DiMarco also won her match defeating Cal’s Carly Childs, 2 and 1.

KU sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee played the full 18 holes yet lost a close battle to Cal’s Pauline Loulier 1-up. In other matches, KU freshman Kallie Gonzales lost to Hannah Suh, 4 and 2, and senior Minami Levonowich lost her bout to Lucia Gutierrez, 5 and 3.

“Today obviously didn’t go as well as we are capable of playing.” Kansas coach Erin O’Neil said. “The team definitely experienced more pressure with the match play format which caused a few of them to attempt shots that aren’t necessarily the highest percentage shots in their bag or they were too aggressive on certain shots in an effort to win a hole. We have to be mentally tougher in our remaining matches this week and play to our strengths especially when in a tough situation. Mook (Kawinpakorn) and Gabby (DiMarco) both had two solid wins for us.”

Kansas will take on New Mexico in round two of the SDSU Farms Invitational Tuesday morning, March 24. Round three of the tournament will be played Tuesday afternoon as match ups will be determined by round two results. The conclusion of the match-play tournament will be on Wednesday, March 25.
