SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Kansas women’s golf team defeated Michigan 3-2 in its final match at the SDSU Farms Invitational at the Farms Golf Club Wednesday. KU finished 11th as a team in the 16-team field and all four of its matches result within one point or less.
Kansas posted a 2-2 record at the event. KU opened the event falling to California, 3-2, on March 23. The following day, KU tied New Mexico, 2.5-2.5, and won the tiebreaker before falling to Long Beach State 3-2 in the afternoon match.
KU senior Gabriella DiMarco led the Jayhawks as she went 4-0 for the tournament after concluding her fourth round with a victory over Michigan’s Kathy Lim 3 and 1. On Wednesday, DiMarco took the lead after four holes and was able to keep a steady lead for the rest of the round.
Jayhawk junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn concluded the tournament with a 3-1 record as she defeated Michigan’s Megan Kim 2-up Wednesday. As they started on the back nine, Kawinpakorn trailed Kim by as many as two holes early and was able to make ground and take the lead for good with eight holes remaining.
Kansas sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee was able to win her first match of the event as she defeated Michigan’s Catherine Peters 4 and 3. Sakdee never trailed in the fourth round and had a three-hole advantage after playing 12 holes in the match.
In other matches, KU senior Minami Levonowich lost 2 and 1 to Michigan’s Grace Choi. Freshman Kallie Gonzales also fell in her fourth round match against Michigan’s Emily White 8 and 7.
“It was good to come back today and get another win under our belt after not finishing well against Long Beach the day before.” Kansas coach Erin O’Neil said. “We played much better against Michigan and made a number of key putts when we needed them. Gabby (DiMarco) and Mook (Kawinpakorn) both played very well for us and really led the way winning most of their matches if not all of their matches. It was also good to see Faii (Sakdee) come back and play up to her ability today. We definitely learned some strategies in match play that we can apply to our mind set to help us handle the pressure situations we will likely experience in our remaining stroke play tournaments this spring.”
Tennessee finished first at the SDSU Invitational defeating Colorado, 4-1, in the championship bracket match. Host San Diego State came in third defeating Arizona State, 3.5-1.5, on Wednesday.
The Jayhawks will take a week off of competition and then compete in their fifth event of the spring at the DAC/SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas April 10-11.
