Evans Earns First Big 12 Weekly Honor

IRVING, Texas – Kansas junior outfielder Briana Evans earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors for the week of March 3, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. It is the first Big 12 weekly honor for Evans and second Jayhawk to be named conference player/pitcher of the week after senior hurler Alicia Pille was awarded the accolade last week.

A Tulsa, Oklahoma native, Evans tied for the team lead with six hits and led the No. 25 Jayhawks with four runs scored as Kansas improved to 17-1 with three more wins at the UNF Tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, over the weekend. Evans batted .600 (6-for-10) and added three walks to reach base at a .692 clip. She also swiped two bases. Evans’ four runs scored were crucial as Kansas won a pair of one-run contests and a two-run decision.

A first-year transfer, Evans legged out three hits in each of KU’s first two games Friday, and led off the Jayhawks’ match-up with North Florida with an infield single before scoring what would become the game-winning run. Evans scored two more runs on Saturday as Kansas rallied from a four-run deficit to top Siena. Evans, KU’s leadoff batter, has a team-leading .424 (28-for-66) batting average and also leads the Jayhawks with 19 runs scored.

The Jayhawks return to Florida this weekend for another five-game tournament hosted by Stetson in DeLand, Florida. The field also includes LaSalle and Chattanooga.
