Gardner Adds to Growing List of Postseason Awards
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior forward Chelsea Gardner’s collection of postseason awards continued to grow after adding All-America Honorable Mention honors to her list of accomplishments. Gardner was named to the Associated Press (AP) All-America Honorable Mention Team, as announced by the AP on Tuesday morning.
The AP All-America Honorable Mention selection is the first of Gardner’s career and she became the first Jayhawk to garner the distinction of All-America Honorable Mention since 2013, when Angel Goodrich received the accolade.
Gardner, a native of DeSoto, Texas, earned All-Big 12 First Team honors and was named to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 5 Team. She is one of 52 finalist for the WBCA All-America Team, which will be selected this weekend at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Tampa, Florida.
During her senior campaign, Gardner averaged a team-best 16.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. She registered double figures in 16 of her last 17 games at Kansas and totaled double-digit scoring efforts in all but four contests.
Gardner became the 27th Jayhawk to reach 1,000 career points with 24 in the season opener against South Dakota and finished with 1,516 points, which is 12th all-time in KU women’s basketball history. Against then-No. 10 Cal, Gardner posted 22 points, eight rebounds and a season-high five blocks. It marked the second time in the last two seasons that Gardner registered 20 or more points against a top-10 foe.
