Jayhawks Spring Prep Continues at Tulsa

LAWRENCE, Kan. – With the Kansas River still awaiting the arrival of spring, the University of Kansas Rowing team flocked south for the weekend to visit the University of Tulsa.

Enduring one of the coldest February’s on record preventing Kansas from practicing on the Kansas River. The Jayhawks kept at it indoors, keeping their intense training schedule inside the Kansas Boathouse training facilities.

“One thing we saw was our fitness is pretty good right now,” Kansas head coach Rob Catloth said about their trip to Tulsa. “Across the board the times we were running were even numbers which means their fitness is good. I think it gives the women on the team a lot of confidence that the winter training is paying off for racing.”

The weekend scrimmage allowed the team to get back on the water and “shake off some rust” as boats went through several practices and races.

“We were pretty rusty on stroke rate, which wasn’t very high, but I think it improved as we went through the pieces,” Catloth stated. “Our top group did four 1500m (races) on Saturday and improved on each one. We moved people around on seats and boats just to see. I think our novice group saw improvement as well.”

Kansas will now focus on the upcoming Louisville Invitational set to take place March 14-15 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The Louisville Invitational is known as one of the toughest regattas in the nation and features defending American Athletic Conference Champion, Louisville. The regatta will mark the first of KU’s spring schedule.
