WACO, Texas – Undermanned due to injury and illness, Kansas women’s tennis faced a difficult challenge in taking on its fourth-straight ranked opponent in No. 8 Baylor Friday evening, falling to the Lady Bears, 4-0, at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
“I thought we competed hard tonight,” said KU head coach Todd Chapman. “We faced a top 10 team short-handed due to injury and sickness. We had a tall order in front of us if we were at full strength. We were just outmanned. Baylor has a really good team and took it to us in some spots. We have to try to get healthy and get ready for Texas on Sunday.”
With its lineup completely shuffled, KU was unable to get past the Lady Bears, who currently sit atop the Big 12 Conference standings. Baylor knocked off the Jayhawks on courts three and two in doubles action, to take the first point of the match. Senior Maria Belen Luduena and freshman Madison Harrison were battling on court one, but BU was able to close out wins on the second and third courts to take the early lead.
Playing at No. 5 singles for the first time in her young career, KU’s Lauren Pickens was defeated by BU’s Theresa Van Zyl, 6-1, 6-0 as the Lady Bears moved ahead, 2-0. Next up, Baylor’s 104th-ranked Leolia JeanJean bested Jayhawk freshman Alexis Czapinski by the same score, 6-1, 6-0, on court four. Czapinski was also seeing her first singles action at a new position.
Freshman Summer Collins, playing on court three for the first in her KU career, was topped by BU’s 33rd-ranked Blair Shankle, 6-2, 6-3, as the Lady Bears clinched the match at 4-0.
Courts one, two and six went unfinished, but KU’s Harrison topped her Baylor opponent, 73rd-ranked Kiya Generette, 6-0 in their opening set. Generette came back to take the second set, 6-3 and took an early lead in the third set at 1-0 before play was called.
cNeely also captured a first-set win as she was on top of BU’s Kely Putri, 6-4, 2-2, before the match was won by the Lady Bears.
Kansas will stay on the road as the Jayhawks close out the 2014-15 regular season with a match at Texas. KU will take on the Longhorns on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
