IOWA CITY, Iowa. – With three top-20 finishers, the Kansas men’s golf team placed sixth at the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa, Sunday.
Iowa State won the event shooting 847 (-17), five strokes better than runner-up Idaho at 852 (-12). Kansas ended in sixth place in the 12-team event, shooting a three-round 292-288-287—867 (+3).
“Unfortunately, we just didn’t play the par fives very well and that really hurt our team score,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said.
Sophomore Chase Hanna led the Jayhawks throughout the event finishing tied for 13th in the 66-golfer field. Hanna shot a three-round 71-70-74—215 (+2) with eight birdies. This marked Hanna’s fifth time he has led the team in scoring this season.
Junior Ben Welle was consistent throughout the tournament, finishing in 16th place. Welle shot a three-round 72-72-72—216 (E) for his third top-20 finish this season. Junior Connor Peck also had his third top-20 finish of the of 2014-15 shooting 74-70-73—217 (+1) and placing tied for 17th.
“Chase, Daniel (Hudson) and Connor all had a nice event,” Bermel said.
Freshman Daniel Hudson led the Jayhawks in the final round Sunday as he shot 68 (-4). Hudson finished tied for 23rd for the tourney shooting a three-round 75-76-68—219 (+3). Hudson’s final round 68 marks his third round in the 60’s for the season. Freshman Spencer Painton, who played as an individual, finished tied for 38th shooting a three-round 77-74-73—224 (+4). Redshirt freshman Brock Drogosch finished tied for 56th, shooting a three-round 77-78-75—230 (+14).
“Daniel Hudson struggled yesterday, but played well today,” Bermel said.
Next up the Jayhawks head to Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa for the Big 12 Conference Championship, April 27-29.
