Big 12 Championship Brackets
THE BASELINEKansas women’s tennis enters the 2015 Big 12 Championship as the six seed, marking its highest conference finish since 2011. Kansas will take on Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9 a.m., at host Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center. Kansas, who will be facing its sixth-straight ranked opponent, suffered a 4-0 loss at the hands of the Cowgirls in the two teams’ previous meeting in 2015.
THE SERIES: KANSAS VS. OKLAHOMA STATEKansas and Oklahoma State first faced off in 1978 when the Jayhawks traveled to Stillwater for a match that resulted in a 5-4 loss. OSU leads the overall series versus the Jayhawks, 28-16.
Kansas women’s tennis traveled to Oklahoma for a two-match road trip April 10-12 where they met both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. During its match up with the Cowgirls, Kansas was never able to get going and was shutout 4-0.
KU was only able to tally two first-set victories that afternoon with Smith Hinton and Summer Collins recording 6-3, 6-2, wins respectively, on each of their courts.
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLSOklahoma State, ranked No. 11 in the latest ITA rankings, owns a 20-4 overall record, including a 7-2 mark in conference play entering the Big 12 Championship. In their most recent outing the Cowgirls bested 10-seed West Virginia 4-0 in their regular-season finale.
LAST TIME OUTOn April 19, Kansas traveled to Austin where they took on No. 31 Texas and were bested 4-0 by the Longhorns.
The Longhorns immediately set the pace by clinching the doubles point with wins on courts one and two and continued to run away from the Jayhawks until they secured the match in shutout fashion. In the singles, Kansas put up a fight with Maria Belen Luduena attempting to hold off No. 43 Breaunna Addison until she fell 7-6 after five additional points were played. On court four Summer Collins had taken a 4-3 lead in the second set after dropping the first, but the match was decided before she could complete her comeback.
Texas downed Rachel McNeely in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 on court six, then knocked off Alexis Czapinski, who was appearing at the No. 5 position for the first time this season, 6-2, 6-1.
