LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s golf team will travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to compete in the 2015 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship at Southern Hills Country Club, April 27-29.

“We want to keep building on what we have done this spring,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “We need some consistency from all five guys down there on a very difficult golf course against some great competition.”

Based on most recent Golfweek/Sagarin team rankings, Kansas enters the 2015 Big 12 Championship as the eighth seed in the nine-team field. The Jayhawks will be paired with No. 7 Iowa State and No. 9 Kansas State in Monday’s first day of 36 holes. The number one seeded team is Texas who is ranked third in the nation, followed by Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Baylor, Oklahoma State and TCU.

“You can just go up and down the board,” Bermel said. “Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU and Iowa State are all ranked in the top-40 or 41 in the country.”

Kansas third-year head coach Jamie Bermel’s lineup for the Big 12 Championship will consist of juniors Ben Welle and Connor Peck, sophomore Chase Hanna, redshirt freshman Jacques Wilson and freshman Daniel Hudson.

Hanna has been the most efficient player on the team as he led Jayhawks in scoring five of the team’s 11 tournaments in 2014-15. This was done behind his team-low 72.0 strokes per round which is currently the 18th lowest average by any Jayhawk in history. A 2015 Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, Hanna also leads the team in top-20 finishes with six of his 11 events this season. Hanna also leads the team in rounds in the 60’s with eight.

“I think his experience is a big thing for Chase,” Bermel said. “He has seen the golf courses last year and his maturity as a sophomore has really helped as well. Chase continues to get better each week.”

Welle garnered Big 12 Golfer of the Month in November as he finished 16th at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic shooting 213 (E). He led the team in scoring twice in the fall and once in the spring. Welle has a season average 72.4 strokes per round, second lowest on the team. Welle has obtained nine rounds under par and seven rounds even par in his 31 rounds of the season.

Hudson has made an appearance in seven of the teams 11 tournaments during his freshman campaign as he is currently averaging 73.4 strokes per round, which is fourth lowest on the team. Hudson has also recorded two top-20 finishes and one top-10 finish this year with his best finish being a tie for eighth at the Louisiana Classics Invitational, March 2-3, where he carded a tournament total of 215 (-1).

“Daniel Hudson has really played well, apart from the first tournament of the spring,” Bermel said. “He has been in the top-20 three times and 23rd last week. Dan has shown a great deal of improvement from the fall as he did not get in the lineup too much.”

Peck has competed in every event this year, including two as an individual. He led the Jayhawks in scoring twice, having his best finish at the Wolverine Intercollegiate on September 6-7, where he shot 212 (-1).  Peck is averaging 73.5 strokes per round, sixth lowest on the team and has six rounds under par.

Wilson is a redshirt freshman that has competed in only one event as an individual event his Kansas career. He redshirted the 2013-14 season and hurt his back in the fall of the 2014-15 season. Wilson competed at the Desert Shootout, March 19-21, where he finished tied for 13th shooting a three-round 70-70-70–210 as an individual.

In the 18-year history of the Big 12, Kansas has won the conference title once in 1999 under Big 12 Coach of the Year Ross Randall. The Jayhawks second-best finish in the Big 12 came the year after in 2000, where KU was runner-up to Oklahoma State behind Chris Thompson’s second-place finish.

The 2015 Big 12 Championship will be played on a 7,184-yard, par-71 course at Southern Hills Country Club. The event will feature 72 holes as the competitors will play 36 holes Monday, April 27 and 18 holes on Tuesday, April 28, and Wednesday, April 29.
