SAN ANTONIO – Kansas sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee concluded round one of the Big 12 Championship with conference-record 68 (-4) at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas, Friday. Sakdee has a one-stroke lead over the 45-golfer field.
As a team, Kansas is tied for eighth along with Kansas State with an overall score of 301 (+13) in the nine-team field.
Sakdee started her first round with back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 1 and 2. Then she was able to respond with back-to-back birdies on her next two holes. She later on fired five more birdies for the rest of the day to give her a total of seven birdies for the round. She currently leads Oklahoma State’s Kenzie Neisen by one stroke.
KU junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn had a solid first round with a 1-over 73 as she is tied for 11th place. Senior Gabriella DiMarco concluded the first round after carding a 79 (+7) and is tied for 40th place. Senior Minami Levonowich finished two strokes behind DiMarco with an 81 (+9) for her first 18-holes and is currently in 44th place, while freshman Pitsinee Winyarat completed her first round with an 83 (+11) and is in 45th.
“We need to adjust our strategy off of a couple of tees tomorrow which should help eliminate some of the bogeys,” Kansas head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We also had a few too many three putts so it will be helpful if we can minimize those too. I am very proud of Faii (Sakdee), she played great today. She started with two bogeys but came back with seven birdies to finish strong for us.”
Baylor leads the championship by seven strokes with an overall score of 282 (-6). Texas Tech is in second with a team score of 289 (+1) and Iowa State concluded the first round in third with a score of 290 (+2).
The Jayhawks will play the second round, 18-holes, Saturday, April 25, and then will conclude the final round on Sunday, April 26. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com
