LA JOLLA, Calif. – Sophomore Mitch Cooper claimed a fourth-place finish in the discus to close out a solid weekend for the Kansas throwers at the Triton Invitational. Five other Jayhawks posted top-15 finishes among fields consisting of many of the top throwers in the nation.

Cooper came within two feet of his career best en route to earning himself one of the top-two collegiate finishes in the open division discus. The sophomore posted a throw of 56.39 meters (185’0″) on his first attempt of the day. Only three other competitors where able to top Cooper’s throw, with Long Beach State’s Jacob Frasor the only collegiate thrower to post a better mark.

Cooper was joined by four teammates in the event. Freshman Cole Ceban hurled out a toss of 55.65 meters (182’7″) to notch a seventh-place finish in the 55-man field. Senior Jonathan Miller tallied a top throw of 52.11 meters (174’3″), which was good enough to give him 11th place. Sophomore Kenny Boyer and junior Paul Golen finished 27th and 31st overall. Boyer managed a top toss of 44.72 meters (146’8″), while Golen managed a 43.35 meter (142’2″) effort.

Ceban also made a showing in the invitational division of the shot put Saturday afternoon. The first-year Jayhawk hit 16.53 meters (54’2¾”) on his second attempt to claim 17th overall.

Junior Anastasiya Muchkayev was the lone KU woman in action in La Jolla Saturday. She earned a 15th-place finish in the invitational shot put after she posted a 15.66 meter (51’4½”) on her third and final throw of the day.

Kansas will now return home for its final home meet of the season when the Jayhawks host the Rock Chalk Classic on Saturday, May 2.
