TULSA, Okla. – With two Jayhawks in the top-20, the Kansas men’s golf team sits in eighth after day one at the Big 12 Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“We played okay, just made a few costly mistakes and paid a premium penalty for each mistake,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “This golf course is hard and the conditions were not very good, especially the last nine-holes.”

KU junior Ben Welle and freshman Daniel Hudson led the team through day one as both ended their day in the top-20. Welle sits in 14th of the 45-golfer field as he carded five birdies through the 36-holes, shooting 74-73—147 (+7). Hudson is tied for 18th after carding 74-75—149 (9).

Following Welle and Hudson is sophomore Chase Hanna who is tied for 22nd. Hanna led the team in the first round shooting 73 (+3), but struggled in the second round with a 77 totaling a two-round 150 (+10). Redshirt freshman Jacques Wilson is tied for 37th shooting a consistent 77-77—154 (+14). Junior Connor Peck struggled in day one shooting a 79-82—161 (+21).

“We still have 36- holes left and need to play better,” Bermel said.

Texas leads the nine-team field with a two-round 567 (+7). The Longhorns shot 287 (+7) in their morning round and an even-par 280 in their second round. Iowa State is second at 583 (+23). Kansas carded a 298 (+18) in its first round and a 302 (+22) in its second. The Jayhawks are three shots behind seventh-place Baylor at 597 (+37).

Texas’ Gavin Hill shot a 65 (-5) in his opening round leads the field with a two-round 136 (-4). He is three shots ahead of teammate Scottie Scheffler, who is at 139 (-1). The UT duo are the only players under par for the championship.
